M & amp; P-15 .22LR Combo Kit W / Recoil Enhancer

2 pensamientos sobre & ldquo; Thordsen Custom & # 8217; s FRS-15 Rifle Stock Kit Para el Smith & # 038; Wesson M & # 038; P 15-22 Rifle & rdquo;

Smith & amp; Rifle semiautomático Wesson M & amp; P 15-22

¡Espere! No responda.

As you’d expect, recoil was almost as mild as an ant fart (don’t ask me how I know). Follow-up shots were quicker Michael Moore making his first trip to the buffet. Or is that his second?

I fired the next few mags standing. I rapid fired five full mags and landed almost every round on steel. I was about 200 rounds in when I had my first series of malfunctions. Over the span of two magazines I had four stovepipes. I had a misfeed two mags later. I attribute the malfs to the 15-22’s break-in period. At the end of a two-hour shooting session I’d shot my way through 550 rounds with only the previously mentioned malfunctions.

Other than that, the rifle ran like a dream. And since then as well. I’ve put another thousand rounds of different ammo brands through the gun without so much as a hiccup. No issues. Nothing.

That’s no small thing. 22 caliber AR’s are notoriously finicky. While there are advantages to the problem: shooters using a .22 AR to train for a full-size firearm get hands-on experience dealing with malfunctions—there’s a limit to how many clicks even the most determined tacticool type wants to hear. The Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 leaps over this bar like Olympic hurdler Lolo Jones jumping over a playa .

Smith & Wesson have come a long, long way in terms of quality control for their AR products; they’ve brought production back in-house to excellent effect. Still, we’re talking about a $450 plastic fantastic—sorry “high strength polymer upper and lower receiver equipped” rimfire AR. A buyer should clean and run their M&P15-22 with a large variety and quantity of ammo to see what works. If problems persist, Smith has terrific customer care. FWIW.

The Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 has exceeded my expectations on all fronts. It’s set the standard for the firearms to follow. Which sucks. How will I ever find another cool-looking firearm that’s so much fun to shoot that doesn’t break the bank in terms of price of entry or running costs? I think I need a bigger income.

RATINGS (out of five stars):

Accuracy: * * * * * The 15-22 was surprisingly consistent, regularly hitting 2¼” steel targets at 50′ while standing and dead-on while benched.

Ergonomics: * * * * * It’s the little brother of the beloved AR carbine and has all the features of its more powerful sibling. The picatinny rail will accept any of the accessories that make your .223 rifle shoot well.

Reliability: * * * * * I’ve only had one misfeed and four stovepipe jams in over 1500 rounds. With a .003% fail rate, this rifle definitely maxes out on the reliability scale.

Customize This: * * * * * Being a .22 AR with a rail system, it can accept the gajillion or so accessories.

Overall Rating: * * * * * The price is just right for this system. For those looking for a dedicated .22 AR platform gun, you’d be crazy not to consider an M&P15-22.

You’re right. I just got the MOE version and LOVE the rifle! We were shooting at a splatter target at 100 yards with the iron sights. This is my first Tactical gun and I couldn’t be happier. I was happy that I could hit the target at this distance! I was shooting CCI standard velocity rounds through it all day. The only time I had a misfire, (two of them), was when we loaded my nephew’s Winchester 22LR in the Mag, otherwise, clean shooting. I am going to run some Federal through it my next trip to the range.

Seems a bit bias being as it’s your first and it gets five stars all the away across….Maybe the rifle is that good but this a too much like fanboyism, I bought it, research it, feel in love with it and bought it so it MUST be the best of the best right? right?.

Haha… you never forget your first, eh? unesdoc. unesco. org unesdoc. unesco. org

If you look around the interwebz, though, you’d see nearly universal praise for the 15-22. So, this review is a bit of a redundant, “I love it, just like everyone else!” It really is a great .22LR rifle. Is it the “best of the best?” I can’t say. I do enjoy shooting it more than the venerable 10-22. But, I haven’t compared it to any other .22LR rifle.

While you’ve got a point Wiebelhaus, it actually is the best of the best of the best, sir! I’ve run ARs with .22lr BCGs, the Mossberg AR, the Umarex AR and a billion semi-auto & bolt action .22lrs, and the M&P 15-22 is not a classic .22lr jammomatic, it is very to handle for an 8 or 88 year old and with it being so close to mil-spec, I’d say that it probably has more options and upgrades available to it than a 10/22. I know that when we have range night at my place, it’s usually the first gun to get grabbed and definitely gets the most rounds through it among the 30 or so other firearms available. Add a few bits and do-dads (like a JP trigger spring kit and a EOTech) and it’s amazingly accurate to 100 yds and takes any ammo I’ve thrown at it. Life gets even better when you add a can to the end of it. Of all the firearms I have, the best bang or the buck has definitely been the M&P 15-22.

Patrick Shockley says:

Yes, this was my first but that was a few years ago. Since then I have owned many more guns and have applied what I have learned about firearms to this review. At the time I felt the rifle was near perfect and after shooting other .22 rifles I stand by my original thoughts.

I love my M&P15-22, but this rifle is the best example of the grave injustice that is the California high capacity magazine ban. I don’t mind the 10 round mags on handguns as much. I just buy smaller, more concealable guns since I have an LTC. Take that gun grabbers. (yes there is such a thing as a CA license to carry) The M&P15-22 just begs for high capacity magazine. Mag dumping 10 rounds of .22lr just isn’t enough. I need at least 25 or really the 75 round drum. If I could have a full auto firearm, this would be it.

left coast says:

I thought this a cool gun, so more money for an.556 AR would be even better but Since I live in California it would have to have a fixed 10 round magazine so I don’t go out and shoot mass quantities of puppy s and little kids. I was born in California and love my state but we have been screwed by politically correct trend setters minding everyone’s business.

Fired my 15-22 for the first time today. Used Winchester Wildcat and some subsonic ammo (both on the “avoid” list in the user manual) and it fed perfectly, only problem was with the subsonic the bolt didnt hold open after the mag was empty. Which isnt a huge problem. Best ammo was M-22 by Winchester. Made for large mag capacity auto - loading .22s. 1 FTF out of around 400 rounds. On the whole a fun shooter that gives you an AR experience at a .22 plinker price.

Genevieve Wilson says:

I our family we have plenty of daughters… and one boy. The boy is all into “spray and pray” for shooting “because that is how its done in Black Ops”… (ugh). The girls however are plenty happy with bolt action and taking time to learn how to shoot with good marksmanship skills and are far more accurate than their brother. Last weekend we picked up one of these rifles after our son said he didn’t want to go shooting because we have boring rifles that aren’t in “Black Ops”. So we went to Sportsman’s Warehouse on the way to the range and picked up a M&P 15-22 (the girls chose pink camo for the design). All the girls, wife and I fired it, a few hundred rounds total… and all loved it. It is pretty darn accurate too. Naturally when we got back our son was miffed that he didn’t get to fire it… and of course that it was pink camo and that is NOT how it is in “Black Ops”… Jajaja Get over it boy! We had a few jams but that I think was due to the first round not being set right in the magazine. I think he will suck it up and later fire it and have plenty of fun just like the rest of us had with it. We’re happy with the purchase and can see that this will save us a bundle on ammo. I can’t afford more 223 at the rate my son likes to shoot it… Jajaja So… the kids blowing a few hundred rounds of 22LR in a day is no big deal. That saves the 223 ammo for mama, the girls and myself.

Bruce Kaspari says:

I just took my new M&P AR15-22 to the range for the first time. Over 500 rounds of various ammo and not one failure to feed, jam or stack. I love this little thing. Now if I can get the new optics zeroed it will be perfect.

S&W M&P15-22 MOE Review

The S&W M&P 15-22 MOE is the perfect solution for the AR enthusiast who wants to shoot on a budget. With the price of .223 and 5.56 on the rise shooting the popular and cheap .22LR is a very attractive option. Furthermore, this platform is an excellent choice for the shooters who want to get the rest of the family involved in shooting. The .22 Long Rifle caliber is the ideal round for introducing marksmanship to children and novice shooters because of the ease of use and low recoil. And they get to shoot a rifle that looks and feels just like an AR-15.

The S&W M&P15-22 not only looks like an AR, it feels very much like an AR-15. It features a bolt catch/release that helps mimic the feel of the standard M4/M16 rifles chamber in 5.56 NATO/.223. This is a feature that is not offered among most competing tactical .22 rifles on the market. The Polymer frame allows the M&P 15-22 to be extremely light weight making it not only easy to shoot all day at the range, but easy to carry out into the woods, while patrolling your ranch for varmints etc. I would actually consider this rifle a possible choice as a survival rifle along with a large brick of .22LR. While not ideal, it’s lightweight, accuracy and high-capacity magazines make it a rifle I wouldn’t mind having on me if I had to survive out in the woods for an extended period of time.

The magazines have a twenty-five round capacity and they come standard with a follower extension-rod to help assist in loading. The disassembly of the rifle is extremely fast and simple and is very similar to that of a standard AR-15. Just remove the two takedown pins and pull out the bolt carrier and the rifle is ready for cleaning.

This particular model of the S&W M&P15-22 is the MOE model which uses some of the popular AR-15 accessories from Magpul. It includes front and rear MBUS sights, a Magpul MOE stock and the Magpul MOE Pistol Grip.

Overall the S&W M&P15-22 is a great rifle with little to fault, however there were a few small things that caught my attention. Firstly the MOE Pistol Grip seemed to have an awkward space between the lower which makes it seem a bit cheap. The MOE Pistol Grip was made to fit the AR-15 rifle which it does pretty well, it seems that the S&W M&P15-22 lower isn’t exactly the same dimensions as the AR-15. It wasn’t a big deal, but it was pretty noticeable.

While the S&W M&P15-22 is a very lightweight rifle, the polymer frame can make it seem fragile at times. It’s definitely not a rifle you’d want to drop on a hard surface or get in a fire fight with. Moreover, the M&P 15-22 was not 100% reliable for us. Out of over 1000 rounds sent down range on each outing, I encountered about four to five FTF/FTEs. Considering this is a rifle dedicated to the .22 chambering and the fact that .22 bulk ammo is not known to be the most reliable ammo to use, it is understandable to have a few issues here and there. The pros definitely outweight the cons with the S&W M&P15-22 however.

Final Thoughts We used Federal and Winchester .22 bulk packs during our evaluation which is available at your local Wally World. Accuracy was respectable, the above target was fired at offhand at 50 yards. While the S&W M&P15-22 has a few drawbacks, I feel it is an outstanding rifle with many applications. I strongly recommend this platform for anyone who wants to shoot an AR style rifle for cheap. It also could make a good varmint hunter if you attach a scope to it. I think it would really make a great trainer rifle for children, women and new or experienced shooters alike. This rifle is worth the investment because it is simply a fun rifle to shoot no matter the user’s skill level.

S&W M&P15-22 “Compliant” model

S&W are now selling a version of the .22 AR-15 patterned M&P15-22 that is compliant with Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey and New York law.

It has been made compliant by fixing the stock so it cannot be adjusted and supplying a 10 round magazine. The MSRP is still $499.

The pistol grip and removable magazine prevent it from being California compliant. 22 Rifles are exempt from California Assault Weapon laws.

That all being said, the CRPA, CalGuns Foundation, and the NRA hope to be making progress against these BS laws soon…

I read, “Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey and New York” – and don’t see California listed in the mix. I’m also very hopeful that the CRPA and CalGuns Foundation along with the NRA will continue to make progress, especially against the cosmetically driven and very expensive gun-test that CA requires. Given that it will have to go through such test costing tens-of-thousands of dollars, and the recent ban on lead ammo in any potential so-called “Condor Habitat” I’m not real hopeful to see it in California. Along the Central Coast area. 22lr which is mainly lead has disappeared from some dealer shelves – at least in Salinas last time I checked – and deer-tags are way down as hunters have abandoned the area and even plinkers are in jeopardy/fear of Fish and Game enforcement action. THAT’s the kind of backdoor twofer effort that’s shutting down hunting AND shooting that we should be worried about and fight to overturn…

So… those unfortunate enough to be stuck in the PRK can put a flash hider on their baby-eating, global warming-causing plinking EBRs and all is fine and dandy but swap out the upper and mag for their larger caliber counterparts, and it’s a felony? Yeah, that makes perfect sense. Sigh.

In addition to classification based on ‘evil features’ the NY assault weapon ban also includes specific weapons —- (d) any of the weapons, or functioning frames or receivers of such weapons, or copies or duplicates of such weapons, in any caliber, known as: (iv) Colt AR-15; —- Is this different enough that there is no risk of it being considered a copy or duplicate, in any caliber of an AR-15?

Sigh. All the brain-dead libbers.

Are the magazine and stock fixed so that they can’t be removed and replaced. There’s a way around anything / everything if one wants to work at it hard enough.

Other then that, just another overpriced .22. Really, $500.

B, I think $500 is pretty good. Not cheap, but you get a .22 AR-15 patterned rifle without the need to do a caliber conversion when you want to shoot .22.

Any ideas on when we can see the S&W M&P15-22 hit dealers’ shelves?

Last I heard was July of this year….

I just bought the M&P 15-22 yesterday. I haven’t had it out to shoot it yet but it’s really cute. Just like any AR…but in .22 … It even has a real AR-type trigger group so you can add an after-market kit if you want. I got mine for $409.00. The real reason I signed up for this place was to say that even thought its name includes the words “Firearms..not politics” I see that most people just cannot make a post without adding a political blurb…somewhere!!

Just bought one this week for $495, and took it out today and ran a couple hundred rounds through it. Then I fired my Colt AR-22 from the same bench rest, and got similar groupings. I thought the Colt was really neat until I got the S&W. Similarities are clearly greater to a standard AR-15 than what the Colt offers. Pistol grips, butt stocks (without tube), picatinny rail accessories, and trigger assembly interchange with standard mil-spec AR options. That part is really nice. I saw some links where folks think the Colt is more accurate, but I do not find that to be the case. They are fairly equivalent in my testing at 25 yards. The S&W, however, seems to take-down easier for cleaning, which is a plus.

BTW, I also saw the S&W at Academy for $449. Of course, I stumbled across that after I already bought mine. Oh well….

just got a M&P15-22, really nice…Got some upgrades and wil go to the range next week. Let you know. Do any of you guys know where I can buy a couple of magazines for the M&P15-22. The local dealer indicated that they are coming…

Just got an e-mail from S&W yesterday. They have the 15-22 magazines for $20!!

ed & 1969: I wasn’t going to say anything about “the Colt being more accurate” but since you mentioned it……. no way someone can say that about any .22 unless they’ve tried every flavor of ammo made. Everyone (I thought) knows that every .22 likes its own brand and model of ammo. I have a Kimber that will out-shoot another guy’s when he uses $6.00-50rd-ammo and I use the bulk stuff from Wal-Mart. (really irks him too. )

From the NYS Assault Weapons Ban:

“(d) any of the weapons, or functioning frames or receivers of such weapons, or copies or duplicates of such weapons, in any caliber, known as: ………(iv) Colt AR-15………..”

I live in NY, and want an AR styled gun. No one has told me how NY law enforcement interprets the line above. Isn’t any gun based on the AR-15 receiver design regardless of name, going to be considered a “copy or duplicate”? I’d buy a Rock River LAR-8 (.308) in a heartbeat, but since the receiver, recoil damping, etc. is based on the Colt AR-15, and looks like an AR-15, isn’t it possible I would get arrested by some overzealous law enforcement official? Or has this “copy” business already been defined in some prior court case?

Other sticking point is the welded on “muzzle brake” some people say is NYS ban compliant. How many people can tell the difference between a flash suppressor and muzzle brake? Would a police officer make the distinction?

So where did you buy for $409? Anyone else know a great place to get a good price in Southern CA?

I don’t think they’re available here in CA yet. I saw on another forum someone claiming that Sportmen’s Supply in San Jose is importing ones with hi-cap mags and selling them for $499 without the mag. Then when the 10-rounders come in, they’ll give those to out. I been calling all the LGS every week or two and they all tell me the hold up is that the 10-rnd mags aren’t made yet and no ETA. Anyone else have any luck?

My local shop Uncle Paul’s Gun Exchange said $499, but he is waiting on the order. Maybe a month or two, but I’m in no hurry & they are great guys to work with!

Is it possible to put a standard A2 handguard on this carbine? I’d like it to be more similar to the standard M4 platform…

I just got mine the end of December and went out shooting with my kids. This gun is a blast! Now I just need a few extra magazines and I’m set. If you are unsure about this gun it is awesome. Also, much lighter than the Ruger SR22 or Colt too. Uncle Paul’s Exchange in Ventura is such a great local shop to deal with. Keep them in mind if you are in the area.

“Don C - So Cal” said it, Where is it for $409? and can I get it in Southern CA? I dont “need” it, but if I see it for $409 it will probilby follow me home. (guns are funny that way)

The Smith M&P 15-22 is a dedicated >22 L. R.platform. The lower has different dimensions than a center fire AR so an AR upper will not fit, and an AR mag will not fit. This prevents it from being classed as a semi-auto version of a military colt rifle. So, if your tricked out Ruger 10-22 is legal in your area, then the Smith M&P would be legal also, at least in the fixed stock, 10 rd. mag model.

Just bought a ‘MA compliant’ M&P 15-22 and started to take a look at it 1 hour ago. I’m taking this thing to my NH house to plink around so I’m going to get some 25 round mags for it since you can only get the 10 round mags in Mass.

The adjustable stock was pinned in the long position and I prefer it in the short position. Easy enough, the small pin was metal and it took about 1 minute to drill out so the stock could be moved. I’m making sure to drill out a hole so I can pin it in the position so I’m legal in Mass (home).

I really need someone to explain to me how the ability to move a stock from one length to 4 inches longer or shorter to accomodate the shooters arm length makes it an assault weapon.

I have a license to carry in 3 states and can arm myself to the teeth if I want to but I can’t adjust the stock so it fits my arm length. DUH

Yeah I am thinking I need some HV stuff to try out. As far as trigger is concerned, the reset is pretty short with little takeup and is only 3lbs. Thanks for your suggestions.

I went through the same trials. I used a 3 lb jard adjustable trigger.

Originally setting a very short reset I would only get two rounds at max. I finally adjusted some slop in the reset and it started working. Also grab the rifle and pull at the magwell.

With the above stated, I've never needed any special muzzle device, or ammo. I can even shoot subs and use heavy optics. (Eotech with magnifier) and it runs like a sewing machine.

When I am rocking and rolling on ARs drills, it can easily cost me $20-$30 an hour in ammo. That is money well spent from a practice perspective, however there is a far less expensive option for about 90% of your training at 0-50 yards. If you have read any of my articles you most certainly know I am a major proponent of .22LR analog based training. Shooting your .45, 9mm or .40 or in this case .223 or 5.56 chambered AR can get expensive really really fast. so fast in fact that you could pay for the this reviewed Magpul MOE equiped S&W M&P 15-22 in as little as 2000 rounds.

This S&W M&P 15-22 review should probably be termed long-term because I have been shooting this rifle for a little over four months now with easily over 5000 rounds through it. During that time, the rifle has been flogged and abused as a training and drill rifle.

That abuse includes being continuously banged about while hanging from a single point sling with the flash hider often getting jammed into the range’s gravel as I transition from rifle to pistol. The point being, the rifle has not been treated lightly and it still works perfectly. The most significant advantage of the S&W M&P 15-22 is that it is the only .22LR AR which functions perfectly as a training analog for reloads/mag changes.

FIT & FEEL The fit and feel is really quite good for a first generation gun made almost entirely from polymer. I am sure S&W will make refinements along the way, however I have been pleasantly surprised that the S&W M&P 15-22 has remained solid despite the abuse I have feed it.

As with any great training analog, the closer you can match the fit and feel of your real AR15 to the analog, the better. In my case, I have a lot of Magpul MOE furniture on my ARs, so it made sense for me to choose the MOE version of the S&W M&P 15-22 which comes complete with MOE grip, buttstock and picatinny covers. The result is that my hands and fingers are building muscle memory and over the last couple months, I have definitely become faster with my centerfire AR15s.

One of the features of the polymer construction is that the AR is a very light 5.5lbs or about 1-2lbs lighter than a standard AR, depending on the configuration. This is easily fixed by adding stick-on lead hobby weights inside the handguard and adding weight inside the hollow buffer tube compartment for those that want to match the weight and balance of the S&W M&P 15-22 to their AR15.

The light weight for me makes me slow down a bit and focus on stabilizing a sight picture before the shot, plus it is a whole lot less fatiguing to shoot for 4-5 hours straight.

FEATURES The S&W M&P 15-22 is available in many different variations, however I chose the Magpul equipped MOE version which includes a set of Magpul Flip-up sights.

Nearly the entire S&W M&P 15-22 rifle is made from S&W’s high strength polymer which I have found to be very durable. The uppers and lowers are not compatible with a standard Mil-Spec upper or lower AR receivers and are designed around S&W’s own proprietary magazine, bolt, bolt catch, barrel, functioning charging handle, and forend.

The parts which are readily interchangeable with any Mil-Spec AR part are the grip, 6-position buttstock, and trigger assembly. The capped hollow buffer tube is access by removing the buttstock and can be filled with all sorts of items and could be quite handy as a survival items storage.

This is not an Atchisson style AR conversion. S&W has designed their own proprietary .22LR AR flavor from the ground up. The bad news is any Black Dog, or Umarex style mags you might have will not work with this conversion. Other features include a functional bolt catch, two-position safety selector, case deflector, single point QD-sling mounts on left and right, and a recessed mag release.

FUNCTION Most .22LR ARs provide 95% functional operability of a standard AR, however as noted above the S&W M&P 15-22 is the only 22LR AR which maintains 100% functional operation as a training analog even for reloads/mag changes.

All other .22 ARs and almost all AR .22 conversion kits do not lock the bolt back with the bolt latch, but instead are held back by a follower in the magazine. Pull the magazine on those ARs and the bolt closes. Loading at that point requires a wonky manual of arms which necessitates the charging handle be pulled back. On the S&W M&P 15-22 a standard manual of arms reload is maintained; last shot bolt holds open, drop the mag, insert new mag, and hit the bolt release with the thumb. If you want to train for reloads then the S&W currently is the only AR option.

Thousands of rounds later, I have only had a couple random errors which were definitely the fault of the very inexpensive bulk boxes of Federal 525 and Winchester 333 ammo or a lack of cleaning/lubrication as rounds started to add up. Generally I do not have any issues over a 500 round shooting session, however above that a squirt of lube assures there are no issues from the gunk. If the reliable 10/22 had a brother in the AR world this S&W M&P 15-22 would be it. I will state that this has been without a doubt one of the most reliable .22LR semi-autos I have owned, especially considering, it is routinely feed the cheapest stuff I can find on the shelves and rarely sees what I would term as “quality” .22 ammo. I will note the feed lips do start to wear on a magazine after around 3000 rounds however it still feeds just fine.

ACCURACY S&W notes on their site that the S&W M&P15-22 includes a match grade barrel which I would say is both optimistic and misleading. If it is, S&W must have different standards than I for “Match Grade”.

S&W now owns Thompson Center who was rumored to make the barrels. I own a Thompson Center Contender with a .22LR match barrel. The chamber is so perfect it only will chamber quality ammo and I can shoot dime sized 10-shot groups all day long at 50 yards and .25” groups if I want to be picky. and that is from a pistol.

Regardless of ammo, my best group with the M&P15-22 was .75” at 25 yards with most groups in the 1”-1.25” range. This accuracy is not particularly spectacular and far from what I would call Match Grade but perfectly acceptable for training purposes, hunting and plinking.

Currently no aftermarket match barrel suppliers are offering a replacement barrel at this point however once some start to trickle out, you will really be able to take advantage of t he very good S&W M&P 15-22's tweaked AR trigger.

On the other hand, it is good S&W did not make this a tack driving .22 with a tight match chamber because reliability would certainly suffer. Would you rather have a training AR or a tack driver that can only chew on high end match spec ammo? Given the intent of the rifle, S&W made the right decision. of course if I picked up a second S&W M&P15-22, I would need to up the accuracy.

FINAL THOUGHTS Accuracy noted, I would buy the S&W M&P15-22 again in a heartbeat, I would recommend it to friends, give them as gifts, and would even buy a second, because this is a training tool and not a precision .22 Sportsmen’s Challenge gun, but most importantly it is a blast to shoot. As long as I can continue to regularly spin the 3”, 1.5”, and 1” steel spinners at 25 yards off hand, I am a happy S&W M&P15-22 carbine owner.

From a common sense preparedness perspective this is the best .22AR trainer you can own, and gets those unfamiliar with ARs up to speed quick and cheap. It is also more than accurate enough for small game hunting and with the hollow buffer tube and lightweight feel it would also be a decent little survival rifle. The S&W M&P15-22 also appears from a distance as an AR which when all the .223 ammo is gone and you are left with only .22LR rounds, this .22 may still provide the same visual deterrent as a full sized AR.

What the S&W M&P15-22 has going for it is plenty; it's a blast shoot, cheap to shoot and has been the perfect AR training analog for me to fully practice point blank to 50 yard shots with the same exact sight offset points of aim as my AR15. From every aspect the S&W M&P15-22 provides the shooter with the experience and training of AR shooting at a substantial ammo cost savings. If you own an AR, you need one of these to train with regularly and below is the justification you need.

THE .22LR AR JUSTIFICATION All three of my .22 caliber AR rifles have paid for themselves in very short order. In previous .22LR AR and .22 training analog reviews, I shared this same math for justifying the purchase of a rimfire AR for training. The least expensive reliable .223 ammo I can find for training and plinking is $5.99 a box of 20 or calculating it out $14.98 per 50 rounds. For .22LR plinking ammo I usually reach for something like the Federal 325 count box for $13.99 which comes out to $2.15 per 50. Comparing .223 to .22, that is a $12.83 difference per 50 rounds. On a rimfire AR15 such as the $500 street priced S&W M&P 15-22, it only takes 39 boxes of 50 .22LR or 1950 rounds and the gun paid for itself.

I am not sure about you, but 2000 rounds of .22 ammo goes quick over just two range days for me. At that point, using the .22 rimfire AR is saving you a bundle when training. Just make sure your 25M zero is the same on both your 5.56 AR and your .22LR AR. I use and recommend this printable 25M AR zeroing target from BobdBob. com http://www. bobdbob. com/

deneb/doc/targets/m16a2-25m-zero. pdf for all my AR and .22 Zeroing which is simply the best target I have found for that purpose.

Suppressed .22LR Combos

Gateway Tactical is now offering our most popular .22LR host weapons in a combination package with our most popular .22LR silencers*. All are wildly popular .22LR platforms that deliver AR, CQC style, classic 1911, and MkIII style form factors in the .22LR caliber that allows reasonable shooting costs coupled with the look, feel, and handling of their popular larger caliber cousins.

All of these combo kits allow the owner to buy a complete set-up and save time and money by getting them from one source at the same time. Many of these are perpetual go-to weapons in the Gateway Tactical demo collection. We have found that once someone tries either weapon with a solid .22LR silencer, they are hooked. This is what has lead us to offer these kits as an option for acquiring this particular configuration. All of these turn a .22LR with sub-sonic ammunition into ultra-low signature weapon in the range of a CO2 pellet gun. This allows people who may be intimidated by noise and recoil to try something less overwhelming to see if they like to shoot. It also is more inviting to children who may have an interest but are less likely to try handling a firearm due to the normal noise and recoil issues associated with shooting.

PLEASE NOTE: Federal NFA laws require that any NFA item sold by a licensed dealer can only be transferred directly to a resident of the state in which the dealer is licensed. Gateway Tactical is licensed in the state of Missouri and can transfer directly to residents of Missouri only. If you are a resident of another state, we can transfer to an NFA dealer in your state to have the product transferred to you directly. For more information on the purchase of NFA items, please visit our NFA Support page. Pricing does not include the $200 tax stamp paid to the BATFE. All combo pricing reflects a 3% cash discount.

Below is a break-down of these two host weapons with four different silencer options. Each has unique benefits which allows you to determine what best suits your particular situation when it comes to a quiet, economical platform in either a suppressed .22 rifle or suppressed .22 pistol. If you have any questions, please contact us and we will be happy to answer any questions about any of these options.

M&P 15-22; More than a plinker; it’s training suitable

Posted By: The Mad Duo December 2, 2011

Where our handlers grew up, if you didn’t have a Ruger 10-22 and a few banana mags topped off with .22LR, you were probably being raised by hippies or sissies and you weren’t allowed to watch Thundarr the Barbarian. Ruger still makes a good rifle, but .22s now are for more than plinking. In addition to being a fun, satisfying shoot, they’re a great training tool for working fundamentals and just getting some range time in. To that end, a weapon built from the ground up to function like an AR (as opposed to an AR with a conversion kit dropped in) is a Very Good Thing. The best one we’ve shot yet is, hands down, the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 .

The 15-22 comes in a number of different variants (including MOE) and is most enjoyably serviced by a 25-round magazine with a happy ending. You can get them with A2-style front sight posts, adjustable A2-style rear sight, single stage trigger, two-stage match trigger, Hogue over-molded grip, optional barrel shroud, folding MBUS, 6-position adjustable CAR stock, fixed stock, threaded barrel with A1 compensator…pretty much however you want it. They can be bought in black, FDE, Realtree camo and Christian’s favorite, Pink Platinum 1 . and of course you can always rattle can it.

We first encountered the 15-22 at the S&W Writer’s Blast a while back, shooting alongside writers like Mas Ayoob, Rich Grassi, Leroy Thompson and our our personal crusty old shooter-writer heroes Wiley Clapp and Jim Shepherd. Pretty much everyone’s reaction was the same as ours after the bolt locked back on the first magazine. Maldita sea. This is a nice little rifle . Jim put it most succinctly when he said something to the effect of, “This thing is accurate to within a minute of prairie dog right when it comes out of the box.”

Since that time, we’ve run three different M&P 15-22s on several different ranges, shooting several thousand rounds of ammunition. We’ve only had one malfunction the entire time. Ammunition included Winchester Super-X 40 grain. Federal Auto-Match 40 grain SP and endless boxes of that stuff you buy from Wal-Mart 330 rounds at a time (whatever it is…CCI?)

Fun as they are to shoot at targets, cans and balloons tethered behind RC cars (try it sometime; great way to shoot moving targets), it is our contention that the 15-22’s rightful place is on the line as a training tool. It’s inexpensive to run and a great way to reinforce muscle memory. There are at least three police departments we know of who have ordered enough 15-22s to put one on every point across the line, specifically for that reason (ammunition costs undoubtedly factoring into that decision).

Obviously it’s not going to be exactly identical to running .223 or 5.56. You won’t have the recoil, so you’re going to recover faster from each shot. You won’t have any appreciable muzzle climb. Though your weapon accessories will work, your LBE won’t be a perfect fit for the mags. There’s virtually no muzzle blast or flash and reloads are going to be a little different just because of the magazines—but not enough that you couldn’t do a skillion mag changes or malfunction drills for less than you spent on bbq at lunch. You’re still going to want fire standard drills and qual courses with regular ammunition, but consider spending some time with one of these in between.

Anyway, we’ll close with a video of our friend Matt, from S&W. He can be relied upon to cheat at everything from Chutes & Ladders to Strip Poker, but he doesn’t lie about guns. Pay no attention to the fact that he looks like an OWS protestor; he’s a solid guy who knows guns and likes to shoot.

We’re the Mad Duo, and we approve this message.

1 That isn’t really Christian’s favorite. We just wanted to see if he still checks in once in a while.

Magpul has finally released their FCS (Fixed Carbine Stock ) - a fixed, non-adjustable stock that fits an adjustable stock extension or buffer tube. As I was writing this I just got notice that Brownell's has them in stock. The FCS is a two-piece design, with two different caps that slide on ahead of the stock. A cross-bolt secures the stock, running from side to side just in front of the rail underneath the extension tube that the adjustable stock locks into.

My first impression of the stock was that it was too short. I contacted Magpul and Drew Jensen, their Project Manager sent this reply:

The overall LOP of the stock is in keeping with the most commonly used collapsible stock length of pull range: carbine stocks between the second or third click out. It can also be lengthened by 0.5" by adding the PRS Extended Rubber Buttpad. We found in our field testing that it would be compatible with the broadest range of end-users by providing it at the stock length of 12.375 with the option to expand to 12.875, (just longer than A1), and this configuration is also fully supported by the receiver extension.

Now, as my buddy Bozee used to say, "I unnerstan the concept." I prefer an A1 length of pull; I have an extended buttpad on the way. For those who like a shorter LOP this stock is perfect.

Why a fixed stock that fits an adjustable tube? First, adjustable stocks have advantages and disadvantages. This should be studied well. Fixed stocks don't ever have to be extended, they don't have to be shut then extend to clear a case stuck in the chamber, and they provide a better cheek-weld. Almost all carbines come with adjustable stocks. With the FCS you can switch to a fixed stock without having to change the extension tube, buffer and spring. Or, when needed, reinstall the adjustable stock, swapping back and forth as you choose, using nothing more than a screwdriver. (While on the subject of adjustable stocks the only one I recommend is Magpul's CTR stock.)

Here's another cool factor for the FCS. I have an S&W 15-22, which I highly recommend. My only problem with it is the adjustable stock. After looking at the FCS I took the adjustable stock off the 15-22 and slipped the FCS onto the buffer extension, which is part of the lower receiver and can't be removed or replaced. The FCS fit great, and since its body is longer than an adjustable stock, improved my cheek-weld. I measured it out to the A1 length, drilled into the bottom of the extension tube and installed the stock's cross-bolt. The drill bit only takes out a concave section on the bottom of the tube so you could do the same thing with a small round file. Just remember to measure twice, and only cut a little material at a time, constantly checking fit as you go.

As with any piece of kit examine your needs. If something looks like a good fit, try it out. If it works, great, if it don't find what does. Once you've got the right combination, with the weapon set up like you need it, spend more time practicing than shopping for gear. Hardware is important. Software provides victory.

smith & wesson m&p15-22 .22 lr 16" barrel collapsible buttstock black finish, 811030

Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 Review:

Tactical22.net was an invaluable resource when I began researching AR rimfire plinkers therefore I’m very pleased to share my review with their forum members.

My interest in purchasing an AR plinker spiked (no pun intended) during the 2009 SHOT show held in Orlando last January. It was exciting to see new offering by SIG and other manufacturers.

I was ready to place my SIG order early on, but after several months and no clear release date, I decided to simply add my name to a waiting list. During the interim I’d become less patient and begun looking at alternative AR rimfire rifles that were currently available in the marketplace.

Tactical Solution’s and Spike’s build excellent dedicated AR rimfire rifles and uppers, but I didn’t want to invest that much money into a plinker, nor did the conversion kits interest me. The GSG5 and GSG AK-47 are pretty neat, but for some reason they don’t appeal to me enough to purchase one.

A process of elimination narrowed down my remaining choices to the Colt line (I like the OPS) and S&W M&P. I’ve read enthusiastic reviews about both and they seem to be an immediate hit with shooters who have purchased them. I had the opportunity to handle both manufacturers models at a local gun shop however they’re quiet pricey in our area. Based upon my inspection, reviews and owner feedback in several online forums, I decided the M&P was the most suitable for my plinking needs, and well under my budget, even after accessorizing. My Colt and S&W comparison information (PDF file) can be viewed here.

My price comparisons suggest that it’s a good deal less expensive ($150-$175) than the Colt, weighs less, has more functional AR-like controls, the trigger group can be changed if desired, has a removable bolt assembly (for easy cleaning), and is manufactured in the USA by a company that stands behind its product.

So, about two weeks ago I contacted my dealer, Donna at DB Flanagan’s Gun Shop, and requested that she give my spot on the SIG 522 waiting list to a deserving soul. I placed an order for the M&P15-22, which she located very quickly for me. If you’re a SIG fan you may know Donna (MississippiGal) from over at the SIG forum. She’s terrific to work with and very competitive with pricing on many brands.

The M&P arrived last week. When you pick it up it feels solid, but it’s also relatively light given the polymer upper and lower receiver, and quad rail. The quad rail and buffer tube for the adjustable stock are not removable. It’s my understanding that the stock can be replaced with any mil-spec variant.

I’ve also read that future variations of the M&P may include a threaded barrel. If you decide that you want to thread this one, the removal procedure is different then you would encounter on a standard AR. There’s more information here.

As with all new arms, I prefer to field strip and clean them prior to shooting. If you own an AR you’re already familiar with the simple breakdown procedure. The only difference in the process with the M&P occurs at the very end of the sequence. With a standard AR you slip the bolt carrier group and charging handle out of the receiver. With the M&P15-22, you slip the bolt ASSEMBLY and charging handle out of the receiver. The functional charging handle appears to be polymer with a metal latch, and is shorter than the handle found on a standard AR.

It’s very easy to clean the bolt assembly once it’s removed from the upper receiver. And with the assembly removed, like a standard AR, the barrel is much easier to access and clean from the chamber end. I use an Otis Cleaning System with flexible cable on almost all of my pistols and rifles. If you prefer to use something like a boresnake or traditional cleaning equipment, they should work fine too.

Bolt Assembly & Charging Handle

I decided to install a few parts I had on hand from an old AR build and add a few new accessories I ordered while waiting on the rifle to arrive.

Boone Packer Tactical Quick Adjust Sling

ERGO Sure Pistol Grip

ERGO Low-Profile Rail Covers

Ergo Rail Mount Sling Swivel

Primary Arms Red Dot Optic (M4)

ProMag VFG

ProMag AR15/M4 butt pad

If you plan to replace the OE grip you’ll need a long-reach 3/16” Allen wrench to remove the mounting bolt inside the grip. I utilized a ball-end 3/16” long-reach Allen wrench that came with my Knoxx Spec Op Stock for my Remington 870 which worked quite well.

I decided to replace the OE pistol grip with an Ergo Sure Grip I had on hand as shown in the photos. Once installed, I discovered that the upper portion of the grip (at web of hand when holding grip) does not snug up tightly to the lower receiver like it normally would on a standard AR15. Instead, there’s a small gap between the receiver and grip. It’s not too noticeable unless you know it’s there, nor is it a hindrance when handling or shooting the rifle. The gap does not affect the installation in any other way; the grip is held firmly in place once installed.

It is my understanding that the gap is also an issue with the Magpul MOE grip. This suggests there may be some slight differences in the M&P15-22 and standard M&P15 design.

If you wish to simply avoid the issue with the gap use a grip that does not have a back strap, such as a Hogue or Tango Down Battle grip.

The Primary Arms Red Dot M4 is popular with members of the AR forum. The red dot works well and is under $100 delivered. An AR rail mount is included, it co-witnesses with the irons, runs on one AA battery, offers 4 reticules, including a 2MOA dot. The company provides excellent customer service.

I wish the quality of the photos were better, but unfortunately I don’t have the best camera and it rained and or was mostly overcast and cloudy all weekend.

My primary goal on this first outing was to test the reliability of the rifle with different types of ammunition and to sight-in the irons and red dot. Given the limited time I had to shoot this weekend, determining accuracy was only a secondary concern.

There were no compatibility issues with the quad rails and accessories (red dot, grip bi-pod, rail covers and VFG) I mounted. Although the rails are polymer they appear to be sturdy.

The backstop is approximately 60’ on this range. Even at that distance, with my older eyes, precision shooting can be challenging with open sights or a red dot. Of course, this isn’t a target rifle, but we all strive to shoot the best we can.

During this session I shot approximately 75-100 rounds of each of the following:

CCI Mini-Mag 40 grain CPRN HV (0030)

CCI Standard Velocity 40 grain LRN (0032)

Federal 36 grain CPHP (550 VP)

Federal Champion 40 grain SP (510)

Federal Auto-Match 40 grain SP (AM22)

Winchester Super-X 40 grain HV (X22LR)

Remington Gold Box 36 grain HP

When I pulled the trigger on the M&P15-22 the first few times it was an odd feeling. I felt somewhat bewildered and disappointed. If you own or have ever shot an AR15 you’ll understand what I mean. With the real deal you have the expectation and satisfaction of some healthy pushback and recoil. That’s not the case with the M&P15-22; there is minimal pushback, recoil and report.

The good news is that you won’t feel bad for very long. As you continue shooting your disappointment will turn into glee when you realize how much fun you’re having and how little money you’re spending on ammo. You’ll still be standing at the firing line long after the shooter next to you runs out of centerfire ammunition and heads home.

The trigger pull is perfectly adequate; no better or worse than what you would expect to find in a standard USGI equipped mil-spec trigger group, however if desired, the fire control group can be upgraded.

After sight-in, I shot offhand for a little while with open sights. Later in the session I mounted the red dot and grip bi-pod (shown in photo) and shot off of a bench, standing up. Although the magazine is long it did not present a problem shooting off the bench in this manner.

Rapid fire is not allowed at this range so I fired one round approximately each second or two until I emptied the magazine. Interestingly, during the session I inadvertently bump-fired the rifle two or three times with 2-3 round bursts. That was kind of cool and no one seemed to notice or at least no one said anything.

Cumulatively, I expended approximately six hundred rounds and experienced zero issues with the rifle.

The proprietary 25-round polymer magazine appears durable and of good quality. It functioned perfectly as long as you followed the loading (one round at a time) instructions outlined in the manual.

Once you’ve loaded it a few times the process goes quickly, but I must admit, after reloading this many times during one session my thumb and index finger became a little sore while holding down the load assist button exposed on each side of the magazine follower.

The magazine bolt hold back feature worked fine. Each time the magazine expended the last round the bolt held in the open position.

Spare magazines were not available when I purchased my M&P, but my dealer backordered two for me for $46, including shipping. At about $20 each they’re very reasonably priced and also available through Smith & Wesson.

I understand that 10-round magazines will be available soon to meet compliance issues in states that do not allow hi-cap magazines for about the same price. (8/29 update on 10-round mags. S&W reports they will not be available to for at least 3 months.)

With the exception of Remington Gold Box all of the ammunition functioned without issue. I had at least one round of Remington GB in each of 4 magazine reloads that failed to fire and had to be manually ejected. I wasn’t surprised given my past experience with it and its mediocre performance.

The target below has five 7.5” outer rings. Each outer ring has a number eight (black) 3” inner ring. The lower rings were used to sight in the red dot and open sights. This is one of two targets that I used during the range session.

I did not clean the rifle during the range session however when I did get to it later in the day not surprisingly it was very dirty. I also decided to disassemble and clean the magazine which was quite simple with the instructions outlined in the manual.

Or, you can just purchase one for yourself like I did and invite your dad along

Below is an update to the earlier review

Since my initial M&P 15-22 review last August I’ve shot the rifle on several occasions primarily using Wa-Mart Federal 36 grain CPHP (550 VP). I have made it a point to stay away from the Remington Gold Box ammunition which has been problematic with my other rimfire firearms.

To date, I haven’t experienced any issues with the rifle however some owners have reported feeding, misfire, stovepipe and extraction issues. I would urge any owner who is experiencing these issues to takes these steps:

First, field strip and thoroughly clean/lube the rifle, and clean the magazines.

Second, unless you enjoy firearm repair, stay away from poorly manufactured rimfire ammunition. You may not encounter an immediate issue, but eventually the law of averages will catch up with you.

After which, most of the issues I’ve read about have generally been related to improper magazine loading or misaligned and or damaged ejectors.

It’s not rocket science folks; to correctly load the magazine one must simply follow the instructions in the owner manual. I know; it’s a guy thing. We don’t read manuals until after we encounter a problem. That may be fine for a lot of stuff in life, but not for responsible firearm ownership. Please, read the manual first.

For the most part stovepiping and extraction issues have been blamed on misaligned and or damaged ejectors. You may have a choice of repair options here.

If you’re not sure what’s causing the issue and or do not have experience with firearm repair the best course of action is to send it back the manufacturer. S&W does a good job here. They pay shipping both ways, turnaround is about two weeks and most owners report that S&W has been returning the rifles with one or two free magazines for your inconvenience.

Option two is a DIY repair and assumes that you’re experienced and know what you’re doing. You can review the YouTube videos below and attempt a misaligned ejector repair.

Additional aftermarket items that I’ve added since my August review include:

MagPul MBUS Front and Rear Sights

Since I usually use the Primary Arms M4 red dot when I shoot I decided to replace the OE sights with a set of MagPul’s inexpensive, polymer foldable sights The MagPul sights flip up when needed and co-witness efficiently with the red dot. They also make it possible to easily slip a silicone treated gun sock on the rifle prior to storage, if you’re so inclined.

UTG Vertical Folding Forward Grip

The UTG appears to be an inexpensive knock off of the more expensive CAA AR-15 3-Position Folding Grip. It’s not as robust as the CAA grip, but perfectly fine for the M&P 15-22.

This barrel shroud is designed specifically for the Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 by MP-1522.com. It’s protected with a black hard coat anodized Type III Mil-Spec finish for a long service life. I purchased the long unthreaded version which extends into the OE quad rail approximately 5/8”. Installation is very straight forward. Remove the OE quad rail end cap, slip the barrel shroud over and down the barrel and tighten the set screw. I’m pleased with the quality of the shroud and it looks very nice on the naked barrel. It adds an additional 8 ounces to the rifle.

According to S&W the M&P 15-22 .22LR AR15 has been one of their most popular rifles ever however due to proprietary design, you cannot swap out the plastic forend for a sturdy billet forend without a $40 adapter, however I figured out another option.

I successfully mounted a Black Rain Ordnance Rifle length quad rail to the M&P 15-22. It provides a rock solid true free-float forend, and requires no special or additional parts, does not wiggle or move and mats seamlessly to the S&W M&P 15-22 upper receiver. It does require modification to the upper receiver, a minor modification the rail and this modification works exclusively with the Patent Pending Black Rain Ordnance AR15 quad rail mount . If you are handy with a Dremel tool then this is an easy modification.

This all came about because I noticed my old Gen 1 4-bolt rail from Black Rain was a little loose. One call to them and they not only offered to send me the Gen 2 8-bolt style and even mount it to my upper if I wanted. Great customer service! The new version with their new patented mount was rock solid and I like it so much I picked up another one for a future project. As I played around with the new rail on an ATI .22LR upper, I started thinking that it may work on the M&P 15-22, it did and here is how.

Step 1 - Remove the front forend support that makes the floating forend not a fully floated forend. Buy or make a barrel removal tool. I made my barrel removal tool with a 1" aluminum pipe with four teeth cut into the end of it - worked perfect. Remove the retaining nut and forend. There are several videos of people showing how to do this on YouTube. Pay attention to how little force was required to loosing the nut, because you will need to use no more than that to tighten the nut back down.

Step 2 - Modify your upper receiver as shown removing the upper and lower protruding forend guides and notch out the front pivot to make room for the forend and nut. I used a Dremel for the aggressive material removal and then used a flat file to assure everything was square.

Step 3 - Center the inner Black Rain adjustment nut on top of the stock S&W barrel nut as shown. This is not a perfect fit but there is only a 1/16" difference total between the two sizes and based on all my test fitting should hold in place without any shimming or soldering. I dropped in shims and soldered it all in place just to assure it was solid. Screw it on to the barrel as shown and tighten down. Note this is a polymer receiver so don't go all ape hanger and attempt to over torque it or you will break the receiver.

Step 4 - Once you have the nut assembly in place as shown, screw on the outer Black Rain barrel nut retainer and test fit with the handguard and trim the handguard so the it will seat flush with the receiver and allow full range of pivot motion between the two receivers. I hit the ground areas with a little flat black Krylon camo paint to it looked good.

Step 5 - If everything looks good and the forend holes line up with the outer barrel nut, add some Lock-Tite to the inner Black Rain threads and tighten down the grub screws that lock the inner barrel nut and outer Black Rain barrel nuts together in position. Slip on the forend, adjust as necessary and screw on the 8 screws. You are done!

Now I have a near perfect analog for my Black Rain Ordnance Fallout-15 AR and all my other ARs with rifle length forends.

I am thinking about ordering a Magpul stock for the 15-22. I am just not sure how to install it. I checked with a few ppl, some said not to mess with the 15-22 Compliant version's stock, it was not going to be change-able. Then I called Smith and Wesson and the guy said not only CAN you do it, he himself owns the 15-22 Compliant version and he changed his own stock to put an aftermarket (not a Magpul, a different brand stock but still same idea) on his. He said I could do this and it would not void any warranty etc.

I am just wondering how to do this/how hard it would be? I don't want to spend the 50-100 bucks to find out either I can't do it, I break something, and/or I can't find anyone to do it for me or help me. Any ideas/suggestions?

I really like what I've done with my 15-22, and I get a lot of compliments etc but the stock needs to be changed for me to consider it "done".

The best advice I can give is if you are uncertain about how to do it, have a gunsmith install it for you. This way you know it will be done properly, and won't run the risk of posibly damaging the gun. It will cost a little more, but piece of mind is worth it.

Aside from just removing the existing stock, you would also need to have the Magpul MOE stock permanently pinned in place. You could do both tasks yourself, it just depends on your level of comfort and abilities. I tinker ALOT with my firearms, but even I draw the line and seek a professional when I don't feel 100% confident.

I had an MOE installed on my 15-22 by a gunsmith. Any smith should be able to do it. I got mine done at NJ Firearms Guild. I think he charged about $60?

Yes thank you gents. I would indeed like to have it done. Unfortunately CMO where I bought the rifle won't do it, they " don't want to screw it up ". Anyone on here interested. Also if anyone has comments on the differences of the Magpul stocks. I'd like to hear them. i figure just to go MOE but If you have the upgraded stock or even that Masada/SCAR type stock please tell your opinions. I'm probably going OD MOE. seen as low as $45. RRages I think $65.

If I remember correctly, you're somewhere in South Jersey. shoot PK90 a message. he should be able to do it.

Regarding the different stocks, I'd stick with the MOE. Most of the other "features" on the higher end stocks would go to waste on a .22 and you can use the money you save to go towards the money you have pay someone to switch out the stock.

Here is the stock I am having installed

It's nice, and I completely agree the more expensive. higher "quality" Magpul stocks aren't really necessary on a .22LR.

And I have a pretty cool scheme on the rifle, OD Green MBUIS, MOE Pistol Grip, MOE Angled Fore Grip, and now will have the MOE Stock, all in OD Green.

The Quad Rail has a digital camo scheme of the XTM Rail Cover clips, in OD Green, Flat Dark Earth, Black, and Foliage Green. I may change that around some time but as of now, that's how it is. I can't decide if I want to leave the XTM covers the way they are (Basically I bought a package of each color, and dumped them into the box, and then mixed them up and pulled at random, and established one side as a random color "digital camo" pattern. I then repeated that on the other side, and used the extras on the top.). Or might get some more OD Green clips and make it completely OD Green scheme on the black, or even get another set of each color and further randomize the camo pattern. One thing that was not told to me by the person/company I bought the XTM clips (and other stuff) from, was that a package of XTM clips do not cover the 15-22. It was said "One pack covers a standard carbine length rail so a pack of each will cover 4 sides". But the 15-22 apparently has a longer than standard quad rail, it requires 6 to 7 clips instead of 4, so I couldn't do it completely right.

Will post a new pic when the stock is on.

I actually have seen one other thought process/setup that I liked a lot. I take it, apparently, the "flat dark earth" was more "bright tan-ish" antes de.

So I saw a "digital camo pattern" on a carbine, and the rail had a lot of that tan-ish color amongst the XTM rails. But they also used one of the Magpul fore grips. NOT the angled fore grip that I have. one of the vertical ones (which are short, squat, stubby,) and that also was in the tan-ish Flat Dark Earth. That really made the rifle nice as well. I don't have a duty weapon / combat carbine / etc. so my S&W M&P 15-22 is both my only AR style rifle, it's my primary but also it's just plain fun for me, so messing around to get the look or looks that I like is fun for me. Which, contrary to what a lot of people believe and practice, I believe that they should bring you FUN, and Magpul accessories make the 15-22 more fun for me, so therefore, that's how I roll.

Hopefully I don't get to the point where I have a whole different bunch of sets of accessories and colors so I can Magpul-mashup my rifle according to mood or day of the week. That would be fantastically terrible and awesome at the same time.

The 15-22 was DEFINITELY a fun little gun, I traded mine off because I wanted something more practical and didnt have the cash to buy it. I plan to eventually get another .22, dont know if it will be a 15-22 though. Definitely a great gun though.

Yea get a Ruger 10/22, a Remington 870, a Bushmaster AR/M4. and so on. and you can be JUST LIKE everyone else!

Just kidding, ain't nothing personal, I'll do what work for me. ya do what works for you! The S&W M&P 15-22 is one of my all around most favorite firearms purchase. it's high quality, effective, entertaining, highly modifiable. but dirt cheap to shoot, excellent accurate with cheap and match-championship accurate with real good ammo, just all around awesome.

Completely different monsters, the 10/22 and the 15-22. I personally chose a semi-auto and scoped Remington 597 .22LR in synthetic stock *AND* a Savage GXP, checkered fine wooded. bolt action. 22LR MARK II, to go along with my S&W M&P 15-22 AR style 22LR. so I have rimfire covered and I did not and would not get a 10/22. but they're great, just not my cup of tea.

Thread: M&P 15/22 fixed stock questions

Short Answer? MOVE TO A NON-KOMMUNIST STATE.

Not trying to be a smart-a$$, but your question is asking the Forum members here, how to circumvent a feature mandated by your "State Law" (wherever that may be), which if true, would be the commission of a crime in your jurisdiction.

And rest assured, our vigilance and watchfulness of possible liberal, anti-gun advocates "trolling" these gun boards, asking questions such as this, then touting to the media how the gun board members are "advocating breaking the law", will be met with the most STRINGENT replies. This is NOT "paranoia", as these types of things have happened in the past, and the anti-gunners are FAMOUS for this type of "tactic", then twisting things to suit their ends and arguments, even though they INITIATED the question.

I am not accusing you of such, and if you took offense, I AM sorry, but these things WILL be occurring in the wake of the national debate about gun control in the coming months, and we are NOT so stupid as to play into that trap. The reason for my suspicion is the number of your posts here, and I truly hope you are GENUINE AND SINCERE in staying around this Forum, and learning from the many highly-experienced Forum Members here. But, asking how to circumvent gun laws on your 2nd post is NOT a good start to anyone here trusting you, ESPECIALLY in these times.

This reply is MY opinion, and MINE ALONE. My name is DocZeus, and I approved this message.

I'm in MD, picked up an M&P 15 for myself in November and it came from the dealer brand new with the colapsible stock and was told they are 100 percent legal. So I didn't think it would be any different for the .22

Bueno. if that is truly the case, I agree, it SHOULDN'T be any different for a .22. but I would DEFINITELY ask an ATTORNEY (local) about it, before I started modifying factory features. Maryland is notorious for their gun laws, so caution is the watchword there.

The NRA-ILA web site doesn't list any "assault weapon restrictions" for Maryland CURRENTLY, but that's just ONE source of info on the Maryland Laws.

GetzzBrah, after further examination of my first reply, I must apologize for it's "tone". Many of us are getting paranoid about being attacked as gun owners these days, and I can't speak for others here, but my radar is at 110% these days. So, please excuse my "faux-pas".

Hope to see pics of your new M&P 15-22, maybe some results on the targets, too!

+1 Doc. I think we all have our radar cranked up, a double layer of Tin Foil on our Heads, and a pair of Kevlar BVDs. Are we being Paranoid, No. We are being Prepared.

m&p 15-22 fixed stock

Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22

MOE $600, Standard $500

One thing I must get clear right away is that this is NOT a standard AR-15 with a .22 LR bolt and barrel. The 15-22 is built from the ground up to be a .22 LR and because of that it is missing some typical AR-15 parts, such as the recoil buffer spring, which being a blowback operated gun it has no need for. It is not possible to convert the 15-22 upper to another caliber.

The 15-22 has the exact same fit and feel as any AR-15 chambered in .223 or 5.56. It is ergonomically pleasing and shares the same design that made the AR-15 one of the most popular rifles in the world.

Accessories and Construction

A big selling point of the 15-22 is that it is compatible with most AR-15 accessories (except the hand guard which does not come off the gun) such as, the stock, grip, sights, muzzle devices, etc. So if you are using this rifle as a training tool, this allows you to set it up with the same or similar configuration as your centerfire rifle or carbine.

The 15-22 is an all polymer rifle (including the quad rail) except of course the inside working parts. This polymer frame allows the gun to weigh just 5.5 lbs which is extremely light for an AR type rifle.

The trigger pull is smooth but not great, weighing in at approximately 7 lbs.

Pick a Model

This rifle comes in several different models. There is the standard version that comes with a 6-position stock, NON-threaded barrel, and fixed sights. They also make a version called MOE that is outfitted with Magpul furniture such as an MOE stock, MOE grip, MBUS sights, and a threaded barrel with A2 flash hider.

Accuracy and Use

As you may expect, this rifle can be fairly accurate, I can easily punch 3-4 inch groups offhand at 50 yards.

However, I use this rifle mainly for training because it keeps my ammo costs low while practicing with the ergonomics and controls of an AR-15. Another feature that makes this rifle shine in the training department is all the controls are 100% functional. On some .22 ARs the bolt catch and release does not work and are just for show. On the 15-22 however, both the bolt catch and release are functional.

Reliability

I have well over 2,500 rounds through my 15-22, a mix of Federal, CCI Mini-Mags, and CCI quiet ammo. Over that time I have had maybe 5 stovepipes or failures to fire. The only time I saw consistent malfunction was when I was shooting CCI quiet ammo (which travels subsonic and much slower than most .22 LR) and did not have enough power to push the bolt back to eject. It would fire but not eject, but that is the only time I have seen this gun have consistent issues. It is extremely reliable for a .22 and it works great.

Wrapping Up

Overall this rifle is amazing. I love that I can practice with a gun very similar to an AR-15 without spending a lot of money. I highly recommend any model of the 15-22, my preference being the MOE version for the Magpul furniture and threaded barrel. This is a wonderful training rifle, and it will serve you well.

I have been testing out the plinker mags, 1st things first, if you buy these mags make sure you buy the load assist or it sucks real fast thumbing it. Other than that i have had zero issues. My only complaint with the plinker mags is that they are so freaking big. I don’t really understand why either, i mean it’s almost twice as long as my 30 round pmag for my 5.56. Fit and finish it top notch however and if you want something reliable then that they are. And the load assist is under $10 if memory serves me correctly. I’ve have used them for about 3,000 rounds now. Espero que esto ayude. And nice review on the 15/22. I have the FDE moe version myself and love it.

Not sure where you live, but I was in Scheels in Sandy, Utah last week and they had bucket loads of the 30rd S&W magazines. It doesn’t look like they sell anything firearm related online though

Ben, I only have experience with the standard 25 round magazines from S&W. they work great for me and highly recommend them.

Ken Millard April 3, 2017 at 7:47 pm #

I bought the “Performance Center” version. It is a bit pickier on the ammo, The quiet, subsonic LR’s don’t cycle (never thought they would). This version comes with a list of ammo’s that are known unreliable and others that known reliable. My barrel is threaded and the stock is great. I’ve put a Nikon 3-12 scope and mounts on it. The rifle is much more accurate than I am.

Bob September 23, 2017 at 7:25 pm #

Got one a few years back slightly used ($425) and had some stovepipes. Sent it to S&W and it was returned “fixed”. Seems fine now.

Even so, I “had” to get another one this week when I saw them on sale for $100 LESS than I paid for a used one a few years back! Investment people call this “dollar-cost-averaging”, so I figure its a great investment, averaging out my per-gun cost at about $360.

Sportsman's Depot, LLC is commited to the safe use of its products, please observe the 4 basic rules of firearm safety:

Handle all firearms as if they were loaded! Never forget that a gun has the potential to produce serious injury or death in a single instant of carelessness. Make safe gun handling a habit to be followed at all times. After you determine that a gun is unloaded, continue to handle it as though it were loaded.

Always keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction! In selecting a safe direction, you must also take into consideration that a bullet can ricochet or glance off any object it strikes, and that bullets can penetrate walls, ceilings, floors, and windows.

Keep your finger out of the gun's trigger guard and off the trigger until you have aligned the gun's sights on a safe target and you have made the decision to fire ! By keeping your finger completely outside the trigger guard until you have aimed at the target, you guarantee that any shots you fire will go safely in the direction of your intended target.

Always be certain that your target and the surrounding area are safe before firing! Remember that a bullet can travel as much as several miles, so you should be certain of what your bullet could strike before you pull the trigger. Never fire at a movement, a noise, a flash of color, or a rustling bush without positively identifying your target.

M&P 15-22 Slidefire Buildup

The Smith & Wesson M&P Series has been a highly popular line up as soon as it was released. As soon as I saw one of the 15-22 rifles in person I wanted to get one. These rifles are a great AR15 alternative practice rifle. With the ability to swap the trigger, stock, and pistol grip along with the fact that function and take down were basically identical to an actual AR15. They come with a S&W 25rd magazine and from my personal experience shoot without issue. Soon after owning this rifle I came across a cheap Slide Fire stock for an AR15. I’d had my eye on the Slide Fire line but I wasn’t sold. Not to mention the recent gun craze meant rapid firing my AR15 resulted in my hard earned cash flying through the air. With this situation I began looking at setting up a M&P 15-22 to utilize the Slide Fire stock while saving on ammo cost. I will get into detail on what little work was required to get this setup functioning.

I sta rted reading and immediately the biggest issue with a direct Slide Fire to the 15-22 was the trigger. The slide fire mechanism basically uses your forward motion on the front of the weapon to slide the stock on a small rail. This allows your finger to basically sit ever so lightly on the slide fire while you basically push the trigger into your finger. The recoil then causes you to repeat this action at a rapid pace. So yes its a glorified bump trigger. With the low amount of recoil from a 22LR the trigger had to be a single stage light weight trigger so you could easily tap it at the rate of the recoil.

I chose a Timney trigger for a couple of reasons. One was obviously that it met the specs that people were having luck with. It was a 3LB single stage trigger. The second plus for me that it was a simple drop in trigger. Now Timney has been around for quite some time and seems to have a pretty good rep with most shooters. This trigger typically runs around $250 at most retailers.

Aside from the Slide Fire and the trigger the last step was to replace the trigger pins while I was replacing the trigger. KNS makes a set specifically for the 15-22. These pins basically function so that they can’t “walk” causing the trigger not to function correctly. Technically you could probably get by without this step but you may have problems with pins walking. For the low cost of around $30-$35 I didn’t take the gamble.

After receiving all these items I removed the stock 15-22 trigger and pins. Quickly installed the drop in trigger & new pins. Installation of the Slide Fire was very easy as you just remove the original butt stock and pistol grip and replace with the slide fire set. It was then time to test. The biggest issue most people will run into is how to actual hold and use the Slide Fire stock. As I stated above you basically place your finger on the back side of the trigger and rest it on the Slide Fire pistol grip or “slide” that you installed. Then the forward motion from your opposite hand on the rifle makes your trigger finger make contact and the recoil does the rest. I had my best results with CCI Mini Mags as they were more consistent. I tried a variety of ammo and after getting the feel for it most of it worked without an issue. I won’t lie and say I never get a FTF or anything but for the cost factor its great fun. You can see the gun in action here .

Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 Semi-Auto Rifle

With it being the start of a new year, I decided I would see if I could put into practice some info I had browsed in an internet forum over the Christmas holidays. The information provided the specs and some suggestions for making a barrel nut wrench for the 15-22. The information indicated that there was also a vendor on e-Bay selling the wrenches for about $25 (although you needed to add an extension to it before using it). I opted to see if I could make a wrench and remove the barrel from my M&P 15-22.

The torque specs for the barrel nut, according to information on the S&W user forum, is 20 foot pounds or 240 inch pounds. As such, it doesn't take much to get to 20 foot pounds and the PVC pipe is strong enough (at least so far) to handle the torque.

Using some painter's masking tape, I laid out the cut pattern on a piece of 3/4" (inside diameter) PVC pipe cut 18" long. My goal was to remove everything white that laid between the pieces of tape. The tape going around the pipe dictates the depth of the cuts which is ultimately the length of the 4 teeth. My teeth average about .180" long. The narrow strips of tape provide for the width of the teeth. That measurement averaged about .170".

Using a cutoff wheel on my Dremel tool and a small file to help clean/square up the cuts, this is what mine looked like when I was done. Try to keep those teeth spaced equally around the edge of the pipe. They should be 90 degrees apart from each other. You could do the same thing in metal but I didn't have any metal around and the PVC won't scratch anything on the barrel.

In the wrench info I found, the person used JB Weld to attach a 3/8" drive socket into the other end of the PVC pipe. This allowed him to use a torque wrench when tightening the barrel nut.

So you are wondering how does it fits?

Here is the fit of my home made "pipe wrench" <grin> with the already removed 15-22 barrel nut. OK, so the teeth are a little longer than they need to be. but it works. I can always cut some off but it is tough when you make them too short.

To remove the barrel nut, start by removing the handguard spacer from the end of the handguard. There are four clips (one of them is circled in yellow in the above photo) equally spaced around the end of the handguard. Push the clips in while gently working the spacer out of the end of the handguard. I used a small screw driver to help apply a little prying pressure on the spacer while pushing each clip in.

Slide the spacer off the end of the barrel. Slip your new barrel wrench down over the barrel and engage the four slots in the barrel nut. The barrel nut uses standard threads so "lefty loosey" removes the nut. One of forum users reported that their barrel nut was just barely snugged. as in almost loose but not quite. All the more reason to make this wrench and check it.

Unscrew the barrel nut. yes, it is VERY finely threaded and takes quite a few turns. Slide the barrel nut off the muzzle end of the barrel. The handguard is removed by gently pulling it forward, away from the receiver. Note that the barrel is removed by gently pushing it out through the back of the receiver. If you have shot your 15-22 for a while, you will probably find, as I did, a good layer of powder fouling around the front of the receiver where it mates with the barrel.

Here is the forward end of the receiver where the barrel protrudes through from inside of the receiver. S&W uses a metal insert in the polymer upper receiver. There is a wide and a narrow key, on the receiver, that mates with two corresponding notches in the handguard.

Assemble the parts in the opposite order you removed them. Place the barrel into rear of the receiver, ensuring the feed ramp is positioned towards the bottom of the receiver. Slide the handguard over the muzzle. Align the notches in it with the receiver. Carefully thread the nut onto the barrel. DO NOT bung up the threads! Torque to 20 foot pounds. Having hand torqued the spindle nuts on my Jeep's Warn hubs for a lot of years, I have a pretty good idea of what 20 foot pounds feels like. I didn't use a torque wrench on the barrel nut.

Asi que. there is a little more info concerning the M&P 15-22. As with everything on my site, I'm not responsible for your using this information and possibly screwing something up.

Making an S&W M&P 15-22 w/ Fixed Stock NOT an assault weapon under NY Safe

Thread: Making an S&W M&P 15-22 w/ Fixed Stock NOT an assault weapon under NY Safe

Making an S&W M&P 15-22 w/ Fixed Stock NOT an assault weapon under NY Safe

While I am resistant to having to change any aspect of any of my firearms, whether it be my mags or modifications, with recent purchases I have made, it will be easy to track what I have and I am sure I will get the "letter."

Due to my profession, which I believe my handle implies, I need to stay under the radar and really want to avoid having to register an "assault weapon." I will not get into the 6 legal causes of action I feel would be increase the likelihood of several provisions of NY Safe being found unconstitutional nor do I care to get into why the law simply sucks or makes no sense.

My question is, if anyone can help provide advice/comments or if it is even possible, is: Can I modify my S&W M&P 15-22, with a 10 round mag, to escape/NOT fall under the definition of an assault weapon?

I have not done any modifications to the rifle since I got it; it has a fixed stock and standard sights. No front pistol grip or anything like that.

It does have "a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon," at least according to NYS and (although it does not appear to apply to my M&P) it can accept a "detachable magazine" which holds up to 10 rounds.

I do not believe it has a threaded barrel, right?

I do not WANT to do these things but I have t do what I have to do.

Could I remove/replace or modify the back pistol grip to escape registration? Then, I was thinking I could do one of two things: (1) pin the mags so that they can only take up to 7 rounds; and/or, (2) get what "tube" *(no idea what that would be) to limit it to taking rimfire ammunition (that is all I shoot out of it anyways!).

Any ideas, suggestions, advice on cost, etc. I know that many will say - just register it - that is not my goal. Looking to be compliant and under the radar for the cheapest cost possible without destroying the fun of plinking with it (despite the fact that this is a great firearm to teach anyone the basics, along with my Ruger 10/22 take down or my old school bolt action 22!)

ANY help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if the tone comes off as tough or rude - not intended to be that way - I am just focused on what my options are here; looking for a solution to reach my goal and objective, which is to not have to register this firearm as well as use it without fear whatsoever of violating the law.

THANK YOU ALL. First post.

BTW, I am a proud and happy owner of: a Mossberg 500 12 gauge (tons of toys on it); a Mossberg 500 20 ga with a pistol grip and single point sling for quick and simple home defense; a Ruger 10/22 Takedown (a real favorite of mine); a Rossi Circuit Judge (shoots .410 and .45 LC out of the same barrel); a Ruger Mini 14; a Colt Snub Nose 38; a S&W .45 caliber commemorative target pistol; a S&W .45 caliber home defense pistol in stainless steel (too big for my hands honestly); and a Walther PPK, James Bond Style.

“ Thordsen Customs LLC has received many requests from dealers and consumers to produce an adaptation for the FRS-15 Rifle Stock that improves the look and fit with the Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22,” the company’s presser proclaims, using the third person in the great locker room interview style. “They have responded with the new M&P 15-22 adapter kit. The stock adapter is designed to compensate for the differences between a standard AR-15 lower receiver and the M&P 15-22 lower receiver. The buffer tube adapter is designed to make installation easier and eliminate the need to modify the buffer tube itself. The result is a much cleaner look and fit to the FRS-15 Stock and Buffer Tube Cover.” Yes, well, the next bit of copy reveals the real reason the FRS-15 Rifle Stock’s making waves.

The Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22 rifle is one of the most popular semiautomatic rim-fire firearms in the country. Sadly, it has been restricted in certain states because of its so called “evil features.” Among these restricted features are the pistol grip and adjustable stock. The installation of an FRS-15 Rifle Stock effectively removes these two features which can aid in bringing a “non-compliant” firearm back to within current restrictions.

Other shooting enthusiasts may prefer the ergonomics of a traditional rifle stock while enjoying the numerous possibilities for optics and other accessories that the M&P 15-22 rail system has to offer.

– Machined and fabricated from billet ABS polymer – Easy installation with just a few tools – Full color installation instructions included< – Mounting hardware included – Proudly made in South San Francisco, California

Yes, the FRS-15 Rifle Stock’s made in the very heart of Anti-Gunland. That alone is worth the price of admission: $199.99.

20 Responses to New from Thordsen Customs: FRS-15 Rifle Stock for Smith & Wesson M&P .22 AR

Ooohhhh! I want one: it’s machined from billet plastic! Can’t get more tacticool than that. Maybe they could have molded it from [Harvey] Milk jugs.

I have considered doing a featureless build with my AR. If I do, this is definitely the stock I would use. All the other ones I’ve seen are fugly pieces of kydex. Not that this stock is gorgeous, but it looks better aesthetically, appears to be of higher quality, and also may not be bad in the ergonomics department.

(Cue the “just pack up and move your whole effing life to a free state so you don’t have to build a featureless rifle in order to use the mag release like everybody else” comments)

Davis Thompson says:

I already have a proper AR, but when I recently learned that, (and this comes right out of the mouth of a criminal attorney who specializes in 2A issue and not a web forum,) you could still buy a stripped lower in New York perfectly legally (the hardest part being finding an FFL with the balls to do the transfer) and build a New York compliant AR, I decided, well, what the hell, what better way to say FU to the state than building a New York compliant AR long after the gun had supposedly been “banned.”

I tried both the Thordsen FRS and Exile Machine Corp Hammerhead stocks. The Thordsen has a much better feel than the Hammerhead, (but warning will only work with a carbine length buffer tube.) I found the web of my hand pinches on the back of the receiver with the Hammerhead and caused me to change my grip.

The Thordsen mounts very solidly and actually shoulders quite well. Haven’t test fired with the stock yet as the upper is still on the way from Stag. But seeing how solid it is, I don’t forsee any issues.

Remember, if you are using it for compliance in New York you have to cover the mounting screw with epoxy to make sure the modification is “permanent.”

If anything, this stock and the Hammerhead just prove how f**king stupid the SAFE Act is.

I have a mini-14 as well. Great gun, but I love my ARs. Even with a dopey stock.

Why not just buy a Mini-14? Surely it’s a better option than this and probably doesn’t cost much more than the process of turning an AR into some tortured abomination that won’t scare the fudds and antis (on paper anyway).

Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22

Pete Moore checks out the latest 22 AR to hit the UK in the form of Smith & Wesson’s M&P 15-22

As an old guy, ex-pistol shooter and police armourer, the name Smith & Wesson M&P means their great series of Military & Police double-action revolvers. But it seems they have moved this nomenclature on, as their latest product the M&P 15-22 is a neat and no compromise 22, semi-auto AR15 variant.

In the UK over the last few years we have seen the rise of the military look-a-like 22, semi-auto rifles. OK, not the first wave, as long before that we had the truly hideous Jaeger Arms AP74 and AK47. This new generation which includes the Southern Gun Co’s V22, Bradley Arms BAR 15/22, German Sport Guns GSG5 and AK57, Spike’s Tactical etc are better looking and more reliable. They are also very popular at seemingly all levels of our sport; proving if nothing else people love this sort of kit, I know I do.

Wayne Titterton (North West Custom Parts) rang me to say he was bringing in the new Smith & Wesson AR-u-like and would I like to look at one. Called the M&P 15-22 this rifle shows a no compromise approach to features and also makes maximum use of hi-strength polymers in the build.

In terms of 22 ARs the biggest problem appears to be feed systems in relation to controls. By this I mean that in a centrefire AR you get all the functions – automatic last round hold open and bolt release, which is nice. However, on the 22s that use the standard 223 lower this is not or only partially possible. The V22 will not hold open manually or magazine-related, and the BAR 15/22 can only achieve this with a special magazine with extended follower that literally jams the bolt open - which is certainly better than nothing.

The M&P however, is built for 22 Long Rifle and shows a dedicated upper receiver with 22 LR-sized ejection port, spent case deflector and fully functioning automatic last round hold open and bolt release. Which is impressive.

Also surprising is the fact that this rifle is around 70% plastic with the upper and lower receivers, buffer tube, forend, butt and the magazine being made from a hi-strength polymer. This leaves the barrel, bolt group and trigger mech etc. in metal.

Unsurprisingly the build goes for a CAR15/M4 style with telescopic butt, flat topped receiver and 4-way, free-float forend. The lower is pure AR15 with all the controls as you would expect – mag release on the right, safety on the left above the trigger and the bolt release catch forward of this. Cocking is by a T-handle and the gun comes with 1 x 25-round magazine and a set of removable iron sights with the rear being a double aperture, fully adjustable type.

The 16” barrel shows a medium profile and is supported at the front of the forend by a removable spacer. This example was not threaded but they are done in the UK prior to proof. Typically you can opt for ½ x 20 UNF or if you want to fit an AR15 flash hider ½ x 28 UNEF. A number of companies that supply 22 moderators (Jackson Rifles, Jager Sporting Arms) now offer this thread form too.

The lower is standard AR spec though and unusually the buffer tube is integral to the moulding and blanked off so won’t accept a spring. It also means you can fit items like match triggers, extended controls and different pistol grips – currently the M&P comes with the A2 unit.

The magazine is much like a Black Dog with a full sized body that holds a single column 22 LR stack. However, it’s externally slotted with ambidextrous, pull-down followers to assist loading. As can be seen at the rear, it’s cut away to allow the last round hold open lug to function. Nice too is the fact that it falls free from the well at the touch of the release button and has a removable floor plate so it can be stripped and cleaned. This last being all-important for a 22 semi of this type.

Checking out the S&W website shows they also offer a 10-round mag, which is for US states that still have a hi-cap ban. Though not too exciting it would make a useful accessory for hunting, as that big 25-round, banana clip can get in the way sometimes.

The trigger is garden variety with a heavy but workable pull; I’d definitely drop in something better! The bolt is a blow back unit complete with spring that slides into the upper receiver, the build is quite open so hopefully should resists crud build up. Slightly different is the extractor which is a hooked arm protruding from the left side of the breech face. Normally this feature is built into one of the supporting rails.

The magazine is quite high, positioning the nose of the cartridge near the chamber and short feed ramp. This near straight-line feed boded well for reliability. Weighing in at 5 ½ lbs (empty with iron sights) the M&P comes up as a nice little AR and certainly looks and feels the part!

With the iron sights included the M&P is good to go from the box – nice! However, I wanted to see what it could do, so fitted a Night Force NXS 2.5-10x24 in an A. R.M. S. QD mount. Though not cheap this is a super little compact and well suited to AR15s in general. All that remained was to select some fodder and start turning live into empty.

As ever I dug out a cross section of 22 LR – subs, standard, high and ultra-hi velocity. I have generally found that most of these guns seem to like standard and high speed fodder best. Wayne told me this example did not like sub-sonics, however that might be due to the overly heavy hammer spring and fitting a moddy might also increase back pressure a little. Though hunting capable, this is more an actioner/fun gun so keeping it quite is not a major concern.

Filling the mag was a doddle and not the finger buster of some other hi-cap 22s. Ammo compatibility proved interesting; as stated the subs were a waste of time, ejecting, reloading but failing to cock the hammer. Lapua, SK and Winchester standard and high velocity, plus ultra HV Remington Vipers proved the best bets. One brand of HV was just on the cusp and gave intermittent reliability. However, with 22 semis it’s just a matter of finding out what the gun likes and keeping the mech clean.

Accuracy, even with the heavy AR trigger, was acceptable with the M&P keeping it at 1 – 1 ½” at 50-yards. There’s no doubt this could be tightened up with a better trigger mech and low mass hammer! But as I said, for an Actioner, it’s more than acceptable. The case deflector works too, meaning the rifle is suited to left handers as well as we normal people without getting a face full of hot brass…

Overall the S&W M&P 15-22 proved to be a good rifle and I reckon they will sell very well.

For: Great 22 AR with bags of potential Against: Love the automatic last round hold open and bolt release Verdict: Might want to sort that trigger

OMG that's a lot of money for a S&W M&P 15-22! Anyway mine seems to work really well with Federal 710, which is marketed under various names, I think Gameshok is the current moniker.

Not in the UK, as that's a good ballpark figure for a rifle of this type. The S&W importers Shield have just sent me two examples - the standard model the TB and the MOE with Mag Pul stock, pistol grip and fold-down sights. Both guns now feature flash hiders as standard so no problem fitting moderators. Prices look good with the TB at £599.99 and the MOE at £699.99, which is fair given the extra Mag Pul kit, which does make, in my opinion a better rifle. Plus 10-shot magas are also avaible as well as the standard 25-rounder for £29.99 each; again a good price tag.

Watch out for a full test in a future edition of Shooting Sports. Cheers PM

Any chance of seeing any of these .22 military look-alikes in .22 mag?

Comment by: Alistair Posted on: 07 May 2011 at 05:15 PM

Rumours abound about Alexander Arms turning their 17HMR AR15 into a 22 Mag and also Nordic Components offering a dedciated 22WMR AR. Yet to be seen though. However, I reckon that people like SIG USA, S&W and maybe Spikes and CMMG will consider the market forces in the near future. Though the trend in a semi-auto AR does seem to be leaning more in favour of the 17HMR.

As always Peter does a good review. My only criticism is you can't increase the photo sizes included in the Gun Mart reviews.

Okay what I wanted to say is that I bought one of these recently. It is the MOE version with a few nicer bits on it and the necessary threaded barrel for a moderator.

Out of the box I was happy with it. Quick and easy to break down and clean. I cleaned the rifle to get rid off the factory storage oil or whatever they use. I then fired about 400 rounds (I have 5 x 25 round magazines).

Reliability was excellent and fast firing produced decent accuracy but importantly reliable shooting.

Then after a clean and 'light' lube I shot it again. This time I had FTE's and stovepipes. Not sure what happened.

I cleaned again and paid a bit of attention to the ramp. It seemed to be more reliable after this.

I have a Vortex red dot sight on mine and a ASE Ultra mod.

Hoping it'll settle down again and fire as reliable as it was at first.

Nice fun rifle though.

M&P 15 Sport - Slide Fire stock + Timney 3lb Trigger

M&P 15 Sport - Slide Fire stock + Timney 3lb Trigger

This concerns the 5.56 Sport model, not the 15-22 model.

Looking for some firsthand experience or for one of the knowledgeable members to offer his firearm's insight.

I have a Slide Fire stock on my Sport. The stock trigger breaks at approximately 6.5 lbs. I just purchased a Timney Competition 3 pound trigger and I'm waiting for it to arrive.

My goal in purchasing the Timney 3 lb. FCG is to increase the already significant rate of fire afforded by the Slide Fire stock. My logic was that a lighter trigger with less creep and no take up would allow the weapon to cycle faster, and thus fire at a higher rate.

Does this make sense, or are there other factors I'm missing that could work against my logic?

My use of this rifle is strictly for range fun, so I don't need to hear about how an increased rate of fire won't allow me to hit a target at 300 yards or other such things.

MAGPUL HUNTER X-22 STOCK RUGER 10/22

The Hunter X-22 is the brand new polymer stock from Magpul that has really made a splash with gun owners. Created for the Ruger 10/22, the stock offers a more ergonomic grip, adjustable length for the pull and comb height, multiple sling points, and M-LOK slots for accessories. The Hunter X-22 will fit all standard 10/22s that use a pencil or bull barrel. You can find the new X-22 in the following colors;

Made in the USA and retailing for $139.95 at most reputable retail outlets and online stores, the overall style of the X-22 displays the typical features of Magpul products, a simple, functional approach that is customizable to your particular needs. The X-22 stock that was designed for the Ruger 10/22 is very similar to the famed Remington stocks that include the available spacers which change the length of the pull and provide for an adjustable cheek rest. In addition, the grip is similar to the shotgun stocks that are offered by Magpul which provides for a comfortable grip in the traditional style.

This allows the weapon to be handled in a more natural fashion. You can use M-LOK accessories on the forend of the Hunter X-22 stock as it contains several slots for such devices. You can even make full use of Uncle Mike’s sling swivels as well.

You will find a wide variety of adjustable ergonomic engineering and tactical styling on the X-22. Similar to the Hunter 700 stock by Magpul for the Remington 700, this new stock offers plenty of features for those who enjoy the Ruger 10/22. The new stock is fully convertible and you can rotate the barrel inset around so that it will fit the 10/22 bull barrels with ease.

There is no gunsmithing needed for the X-22 stock to fit the standard Ruger 10/22 .22 LR pattern rifles. In addition, this product also comes with a reversible barrel tray so that it will correctly fit the factory pencil and the heavy bull barrels featured for the 10/22.

Push button QD swivel that is compatible in rear with the optional Sling Mount Kits

M-LOK slots on the forend bottom and sides that can be used for a wide variety of applications, accessories, and mounting options for the sling

1 – ¼” Footman’s Loops for the left and right rear of the stock

2 dimple drill points so you can install optional standard swivel studs for the stock

Reversible barrel tray will accept all factory and aftermarket barrels up to 0.920”

Non-slip rubber butt pad

Optional Cheek Riser Kits to raise overall height by 0.25”, 0,50”, and 0.75”

Compatible will all factory Ruger 10/22 magazines

60 degree grip angle from the bore axis

Adjustable LOP that ranges from 12.5” to 14.5” w/0.50” spacers

Phil - I am 3 month follower and shout a big thanks for all the good advice and training. I read all the materials and posts as suggested. I am retired CFO and took over my investments 2 years ago from broker after frustration with returns. I followed some conservative advice for retirees and have 60% bonds currently in a 5m portfolio. I had been doing covered calls on my stocks to boost returns and slowly am getting more aggressive after following your site and my son who has been with you for 6 months. I allocated 1.5m to stocks and am scaling up from 30%. I did some of the trades suggested in early June using Aug & Oct buy/writes on CSCO, WMT, MON, WFR, DO in addition to calls on XOM, CVX, PEP, PG, WM, T that I owned. Most are doing very well (4-24%) in 60 days. My good problem is that instead of getting longer, I will be making 6% quickly (50% plus annualized) and getting called away on many positions. What would you advise for getting long again. Thanks again for such a great job advising all of us!

I have been very fortunate over the years as an investor. Last year was on of my best in terms of percentage gains. I have to attribute much of this success to my membership in PSW which gave me the best education available anywhere when it comes to the understanding of option trading. discipline and general trading strategies. I will be forever grateful to Phil and the many "highly skilled" traders that have offered their advice.

Started my membership in mid-Oct and have since then learned so much about options by reading the site's articles and postings, members' chats and suggested trades – as a bonus, the articles are entertaining as well! Phil's long-term investing strategy makes really good sense as I've seen its effect on my GLW positions. Phil – thanks for sharing your knowledge of the market! I've worked as risk analyst for the investment dept of a $19B insurance company, and the scope and depth of your daily commentaries blows away what I have seen and heard from the PMs and even the chief investment officer! Most of all, I will continue to be a member because you have your priorities right (from my POV) – it's not all about money and power.

I would like to thank Phil and PSW crew for the insight and assistance (even the liberals). In December I initiated long stock positions buying stock, writing calls and puts in AAPL, WFR and CHK (scaling in and out). Over the last week I have been trimming back my positions selling stock and taking out my callers and putters. I am now back to my initial 25% position that I started with in December. However this time, my cost basis on shares AAPL, WFR, and CHK is $0! With money to spare from those positions.

Phil - Your logic not only makes sense, but it made a lot of premium profit for me over the past 12 months. I have recovered much of the massive equity losses of last year. My Monday play is the sale of long term puts on FXI. Love the premium!

Phil, I followed your investing ideas in LTP quite closely. It seems your insightful fundamental analysis knowledge serves you v. well. I get entertained and they are profitable.

hil, I hit my targets for the year in my 401K (thanks in no small part to your site), so I cashed out of all positions a couple of weeks ago. Feels good. I'm conservative with this money – looking for 2% per month, which i've been able to do… thx.

I have followed a lot of Phil's picks over the last several years and made money using the exact option strategies he outlines. Of all the contributors on SA, he offers the most actual and ready to implement advice that has put money in my account. Many of us on SA actually are sad when we don't see Phil's postings for an extended period.

Phil/CL-that play made a quick $500 per contract! Took all of 10 minutes! I want to thank you for helping me not just learn a bit about trading, but giving me some confidence and most of all a rewarding "hobby" to look forward to each day. I have had a few mistakes and losses along the way, but I have had some great wins too and I am now consistently making money trading futures and have even learned to go to sleep while holding a losing position knowing that tomorrow is always another opportunity to win again. So thanks again for your help and patience along the way.

Newer member here, but just wanted to say thank you too. I've learned so much and I hope you'll be around for a long time helping us learn along the way.

WOW, glad I went bearish… Phil, thanks for the help on the QID calls yesterday, I turned it into a partial cover rolling down to the Feb 52s selling the 55s 1/2 covered. Sold 1/2 and now lowered my cost basis to $4.38 on the $52s (fully covered).

Phil: UNH, hedged stock position, doing great, up over 50 %,

I love it when a trade really comes together. After 4 DD's and a roll, I cashed out 16 times my initial position in TLT today for a 140% gain. Thank you Phil for the lessons in scaling in, and paying for position.

That was a quick double on the DIA calls. trailing stop in place.

Phil/BCS - Didn't realise they traded here. Should've known really. Thanks for the tip. managed to pick some up just before the close at a 15% discount to the UK closing price.

I have been reading the "free" PSW for about a year and have always liked Phil's style as it closely resembled the way I like to trade (mostly naked put options). I have been a paid subscriber for about 5 weeks and I have been learning a lot from Phil and other members. I had made some money on Phil's "free" ideas in the past and I joined because one of Phil's futures ideas paid for my subscription within the same day (NG). Phil deserved my subscription and I was eager to learn more. I just did a quick tally and within the last 5 weeks the ideas that I chose to follow from Phil generated over 25K in options profits and 12K in futures profits (some of my trades were more conservative than what Phil's had suggested). I have a lot to learn, experience and confidence to gain. Thanks again Phil and Successful Trading to all.

Your discussion during your web seminar on SPX and SDS today was great. It really let me see how you look at the numbers and use the 5% rule to see where inflection points occur and what the bands look like. This was incredibly helpful. I actually sold out of my small short position at a good profit ( which was more a bet on a short term fluctuation rather than a hedge after listening to you) and will look more deeply at my portfolio and how to hedge it. In addition your view on hedging was also very helpful looking at the leverage you can get w/ a small spread, and protect portfolio against a big move against me. Thank you for your sharing this. Very helpful.

Gel1…..I've been here 6 months, mostly watching and learning. Lots of smart people on the site and I've learned a lot from Phil and many others. //// Inflan - I have to trump your sentiments regarding the wisdom of the board. I have to thank Phil and the many contruibutors for a 80% profit for 2009. I have learned a lot and am still learning ( even occasionally about political issues - ha! )

Phil: I am always able to figure out your trades, including the rational when put in the right context of previous comments, etc. Keep doing what you're doing. It is much appreciated, and invaluable. Your hit rate of successful trades has been very high in my 1.5 months as a member, but even more importantly is your teaching of how to repair and DD positions that haven't gone your way yet. As with most members, we all have our ‘pet' trading interests, and learning how to think about trading is much more important than a specific trade, which could see the conditions behind it change an hour later. This is the classic case, of ‘Teach us to Fish', rather than just giving us a fish once in a while. ¡Gracias!

Phil - I celebrate today, having reached my goal for the year, trading in sync with your education and guidance, of 1 million in profit. I learned a lot, achieved much, and am profoundly grateful. To be honest, when I set the goal I thought it was daunting, as I have for many years been an investor in equities but did very little with options. Learning and doing has for me been a blast! I reached my goal by following Phil's strategies - lots of Buy/Writes, covered calls on equities. naked put entries for income production. I did it with 2.5 mil and kept 600,000 in cash in case I got in trouble. I concentrated on stocks (many of my own choosing) that had decent dividends and wrote front month calls against (OTM) which has worked well in this market run. 25% of my gain is in dividends and premium selling, with the balance in appreciation.

Fed days are fun! Just for grins I decided to see how much money I could make in two clicks. I bought DIA calls right when the surge started and then sold them the minute they hit my account. Net gain of 20% in 20 seconds. Can't do that very often…

I have to thank you for excelling yourself during this past week. I have spent a good few hours going over your notes and comments and there are so many gems on repairing and rolling trades that I have been beavering away on paying special attention to my major positions and analysing them using your approach on Tuesday. Being able to look at a group of trades on the same underlying (in this case AAPL) and taking a detached view by assessing the impact of the underlying reaching different price points was extremely reassuring.

Phil - great call in oil this morning! Now that Im no longer studying and am back in the real world I can only check this in the morning, at lunch, and after work. Anyways, you've been killing it on oil ( even more than you usually do) so I made a point to wake up extra early and made .25 off your ‘buy oil if you're brave'recommendation. It's nice to wake up and scalp 100+ bucks before I even start my real job. You lay those golden eggs everyday Phil! I thank you for that!

You may wonder if anyone gets anything out of you seminars (or may not wonder). Anyway, I almost never day trade because of my job. Today, I was home due to the snow and since I was behind by 2 weeks on watching your recorded seminars I though I would watch one of them. I set up my pivot point charts in TOS to match the ones in your seminar and made the QQQ trade from this morning. I only bought 5 puts. While I watched the seminar, I would pause then switch back and forth and watch the live QQQ chart. I ended up stopping out for a $170 gain, but it was pretty cool to have the dip and recovery at the same time I was learning the art of stopping out when a pivot line was taken out.

My watch list looks like a grid where Phil's recommendations went UP and everything else went DOWN! It looked something like an ad for Philstockworld. I am half in cash, followed the recommendations (AAPL TASR YHOO) on a 20K portfolio and still up 1% for the day. ¡Gracias!

I have learned more about options in the past 2 weeks as a full PSW member that the previous 5 yrs of making more bad than good option plays. The educational material alone is worth several times the price of admission. I have had an expensive education on what not to do - what is past is past - I am looking forward to profitable/fun future.

Blessings, ALL: So we have completed two months of 2017. So far it has been a good ride with my PSW all short put portfolio showing a 15.73% gain with $83K in profits harvested in 2017.

WISH TO EXTEND A BIG THANK YOU! I netted about $18,000 on the short Jan puts and the annualized ROI/M is mind boggling! Hope to meet you some day and buy you and your significant other a nice dinner. Best Regards Newt

Phil - Rode the /QM down from 99.65 at 7pm and now I'm taking your advice, taking the $$ and going to enjoy a restful night sleep. I don't post often so I want to say thanks for sharing your incredible market acumen with all of us. Your site has a unusually talented group of investors (and some characters) and I enjoy my days trading more because of it.

Dear Phil, I have followed along with your commentary and alerts and have been flabbergasted at your quick analytical skills and your journalistic skills to explain it clearly. In a little over three weeks I have cleared almost 1000.00 dollars and got an intensive education at the same time. I would like to immediately upgrade my membership. It is hard for me to follow all evening as I am in Tokyo but I can join you at the beginning of the market and read the next day.
